Hula o Maui Sparkling Wine

This wine is made year-round on the island of Maui from Maui Gold pineapples - hence, no vintage.

Aroma - light pineapples
Taste - light pineapples, slightly bitter

I really wanted to like this sparkling wine, but it's a little too bitter for me. The bubbles are also coarser than the Lokelani sparkling rose that this winery produces.

Byron Pinot Noir 2011, Santa Barbara County, CA - $13.50

I bought this wine at Costco for $13.50/bottle. It is 100% Pinot Noir.

Aroma - light cherries and spice
Taste - slight tart cherries, minerals, cocoa, dry finish

The winery website indicates that the wine is 14.4% alcohol, but the bottle's label says 13%. This wine doesn't smell or taste like it's 14.4%. I would go with the alcohol content printed on the bottle.

Chehalem Three Vineyard Pinot Noir 2010, Willamette Valley, OR - $24

We received this wine as a gift from JG and MG for Christmas. I knew it would be really nice so I saved it for a special occasion - and we weren't disappointed! It is 100% Pinot Noir from three different vineyards (Ridgecrest, Stoller, and Corral Creek) and was rated 90 by Wine Spectator. It retails online for $24/bottle.

Aroma - raspberries and tart cherries
Taste - red fruit, light gunpowder, dry, very light tobacco, smooth, good acid

This wine went great with sushi tonight (crab roll, salmon and tuna nigiri, rainbow roll). And it's only 13% alcohol - perfect! Thanks for the fabulous wine, JG and MG!

Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne 2010, Italy - $14

wine bottle

Friends brought this wine over for dinner on July 4. They purchased it at Royal Blue. It retails online for $14/bottle.

Aroma - dark inky fruit, a little hot (14% alcohol)
Taste - black fruit, good acid, sweet tobacco, moderate tannins

Yummy! Very food friendly.
