Aroma - black fruit, dark cocoa, a little hot
Taste - black fruit, dark cocoa, very smooth, moderate tannins

So yummy!!!

Kaiken Malbec 2008, Mendoza, Argentina - $10


I purchased this wine at Costco for $10/bottle. We had it during our Academy Awards viewing tonight! It was rated 88 points by Wine Enthusiast.

Aroma - dark fruit, a little musty, a little spice
Taste - dark fruit, a little musty, a little spice, dark cocoa, moderate tannins.

It went well with chips/queso/salsa and chicken pesto pasta with roasted red bell peppers. Yum!

Santa Cristina Sangiovese 2009, Toscana, Italy - $11


RC2 brought this wine over to share for Academy Awards night! It retails for $11/bottle, and is a blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Strawberries, musty - nice!

Durigutti Malbec 2009, Mendoza, Argentina - $14

MS and SD brought this wine over for Academy Awards night! It retails online for $14/bottle, and was rated 89 by Stephen Tanzer and 87 by Wine Spectator.

Aroma - dark fruit, spice, a little musty
Taste - dark fruit, spice, a little tobacco

Good with salad and pesto pasta, chips/queso/salsa!

Rubrato Aglianico 2007, Irpinia Aglianico, Italy - $16/$40

Also had this wine at Cru with GM and JS, where it retails for $40/bottle. It retails online for $16/bottle. It has been rated 87 by Wine Spectator, Robert Parker, and Stephen Tanzer.

Aroma - red and dark fruit, musty
Taste - red and dark fruit, leathery, tobacco, strong tannins

This wine went great with the Cru Steak Pizza - perfect!!!

San Pietro Pinot Noir 2009, Alto Adige, Italy - $12.99/$40

We had this wine today at Cru with GM and JS. It retails at the restaurant for $40/bottle, and online for $12.99.

Aroma - bright cherries
Taste - bright cherries, light black tea, light-bodied, soft tannins

This wine was very light and fruit friendly - it went well with the Margherita and Salsiccia Pizzas.

This wine is a blend of 90% Malbec and 10% Merlot. I purchased it for $9/bottle at Costco.

Aroma - red and dark fruit
Taste - red and dark fruit, moderate tannins, dark cocoa finish

Yummy! May be one of my new favorites!

Algairen Garnacha 2008, Spain - $12

CC brought this wine to TV night. It is 100% Grenache.

Aroma - tart cherries
Taste - tart cherries, raisins, sweet tobacco, moderate tannins

Good with our snacks, including truffle oil popcorn, falafel chips and hummus, BBQ pop chips, whole grain crackers/apples/honey, and dark chocolate-covered pomegranate. Yum!

Austin Wine Merchant - Beaujolais Tasting



All of the wines we tasted today at Austin Wine Merchant were 100% Gamay from Beaujolais, France.

Château du Basty Lantignie Beaujolais 2009, France - $11.99
Aroma - light, a little floral
Taste - watery, light, soft tannins, a little wood and flowers
Okay, but probably too light for most - also not crazy about the slight floral taste and smell.

Château du Basty Régnié Beaujolais 2009, France - $13.75
Aroma - bright red fruit
Taste - bright red fruit, light black tea, soft tannins, a little floral
Okay, still too floral for me. See my previous tasting notes for this wine.

Joseph Drouhin Brouilly 2009, Beaujolais, France - $17.50
Aroma - red fruit
Taste - red fruit, black tea, soft tannins
Good! This one has a little more body to it than the last two.

Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes Côte de Brouilly 2010, Beaujolais, France - $17.50
Aroma - sweet red fruit, cough syrup
Taste - same

Château des Labourons Fleurie 2010, Beaujolais, France - $17.50
Aroma - red cherries
Taste - red cherries, very light black tea
Good! I like this wine!

It was slightly woody for my taste. Went well with green olives, Parmesan, and whole grain crackers.

Château Bouscaut Grand Cru Classé de Graves 2007, Pessac-Léognan, France - $35

This wine is a blend of 48% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Malbec. It usually retails for $35/bottle at the Austin Wine Merchant, but it was on sale for $25.99.

Aroma - dark fruit, soft cocoa
Taste - dark fruit, dark cocoa, moderate tannins, smooth

I like this wine! What a great Valentine's treat! Went great with pesto pasta/turkey/roasted tomatoes. Of course, also goes great with dark chocolate-covered blueberries!

Chateau La Croix Moniduc Bordeaux 2008, France - $36


We purchased a bottle of this wine at Olivia's for $36/bottle. It is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It is also offered at Paggi House for $10/glass.

Aroma - blackberries, a little musty
Taste - blackberries, a little black tea, Old World, moderate to strong tannins



Good with marinated olives, pomme frites, and oysters! Clashed a little with my scallops, but went great with the olive oil and Parmesan cheese risotto.

Chateau de la Gardine Chateaneuf-du-Pape 2007, France - $37.50


It's Superbowl Sunday! MS and SD brought this wine to dinner. It is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and small amounts of Syrah and Muscardin. It was purchased at Austin Wine Merchant for $37.50, and it apparently rivals wines twice its price. Robert Parker rated it 90 points.

Aroma - red and black fruit
Taste - black fruit, black tea, moderate tannins



Great with oven-fried chicken, roasted Brussels sprouts, mac-n-cheese! A nice recommendation from Austin Wine Merchant!

Rodney Strong Estate Vineyards Pinot Noir 2009, Russian River Valley, CA - $18


Had this at JB's with salad. It retails for $15 - 20/bottle online and is rated 91 by Wine Enthusiast.

Aroma - red and dark fruit
Taste - red and dark, dark cocoa, soft tannins

MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noir 2009, Central Coast, CA - $17


JB served this wine before dinner tonight. It retails online for $17/bottle.

Aroma - red fruit
Taste - smooth red fruit, black tea, a little spice, soft tannins

Like! Had with chips and carrots with white bean dip. Yummy!

Les Hérétiques Vin de Pays de l'Hérault Red Table Wine 2009, France - $11


We purchased a bottle of this wine at East Side Cafe for $28/bottle, although I've seen it at Whole Foods for $11/bottle. It is a blend of Carignan and Syrah, and is imported by Louis/Dressner Selections.

Aroma - black fruit
Taste - black fruit, black tea, moderate tannins

Had this wine with Shitake-ginger potstickers, salad with Dijon vinaigrette, jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab cake, and acorn squash with soy-ginger dressing. The wine complimented all of the dishes nicely!
