Geyser Peak Winery Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Alexander Valley, CA - $11

I purchased this wine for $11/bottle at Costco. Wine Enthusiast rated it 90 points, past vintages have been rated in the high 80s and low 90s.

Aroma - black fruit, spicy, a little hot (at 13.5% alcohol, this is a little surprising)
Tate - black fruit, dark cocoa, strong tannins, long finish kind of medium-bodied for a Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a very simple, straightforward wine. It's fine for the price. I like a little more complexity and interest in my wines, but this is absolutely drinkable and could even be enjoyable if you want a simple, easy-drinking wine.

Brazilian BBQ Night

Tonight RSam and MSam made amazing Brazilian BBQ for us! We had two red wines with the main meal.

Austin Wine Merchant - Beaujolais Tasting

Today the AWM held a Beaujolais tasting. These wines are all 100% Gamay, a varietal that is known to be acidic and even lighter-bodied than Pinot Noir. In fact, Gamay is a relative of Pinot Noir. Gamay is extremely food friendly, and can be paired with seafood as well as foods usually associated with other red wines.

For those not familiar with Beaujolais, please note that Beaujolais is not the same as Beaujolais Nouveau. All of these wines are classified as Cru Beaujolais, and thus the vineyards in this area are not allowed to make Beaujolais Nouveau.

Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes Côte de Brouilly 2010, Beaujolais, France - $17.50
This wine is imported by Vintage '59. According to the importer's website, this area of Beaujolais AOC resides in the southern end of Burgundy, and the label for this wine is shared by both Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes and Château Thivin (see the second wine in this tasting).

Aroma - raspberries
Taste - cherries and raspberries, soft tannins, acid, young

An okay wine. If it were any thicker in texture, it would bordering on tasting like cough syrup to me. See my updated tasting notes for this wine.

Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 2009, Beaujolais, France - $26.25
This wine is imported by Kermit Lynch and is rated 90-91 points by Wine Advocate.

Aroma - red fruit
Taste - red fruit, soft tannins, slight black tea, smooth and clean

I like this texture of this wine - it's very smooth and clean.

Joseph Drouhin Juliénas 2009, Beaujolais, France - $17.50

Aroma - deep red fruit, very nice
Taste - red fruit, clean, smooth, well-balanced, elegant

I really, really like this one - it's my favorite of the tasting! It would be a more elegant choice in comparison to a similarly-priced Pinot Noir.

Domaine Chignard Fleurie Les Moriers 2010, Beaujolais, France - $27.50
According to the importer Kermit Lynch's website, the Les Moriers vineyard is planted on what used to be a silk-producing area full of mulberry trees (on which silkworms would feed). It was rated 88-89 by eRobertParker.com.

Aroma - very aromatic red fruit, slightly floral
Taste - heaviest-bodied of the four, moderate tannins, slightly acidic

Like it!

A really great learning experience today at the Austin Wine Merchant!

Twin Liquors Perfect Pairing Guide

I just stumbled on this info - it's actually very helpful, especially for those who still believe that white goes with fish and chicken, and red goes with red meats.

When in doubt, check this out! It provides nice suggestions for food and wine pairings that include both red and white choices.

The next time anyone tries to limit you with the "white with fish and red with meat" rule, throw this link at them!

Azienda Agricola Tintero Elvio, Tintero Rosso N.V. - Piemonte, Italy - $12.50

I purchased this wine at the Austin Wine Merchant for $12.50/bottle. It is imported by Kermit Lynch and is a blend of 40% Nebbiolo, 40% Barbera, 10% Dolcetto, and 10% Cabernet Franc. It is aged in stainless steel, and only contains 12.5% alcohol.
