Honig Vineyard & Winery, Rutherford, CA - wine tasting

My first ever industry wine tasting - so exciting! It was arranged, of course, by Chef SN. MON, ShK, and I all tasted - SK (designated driver) sniffed.

We arrived at the cute little tasting room with a gorgeous shaded outdoor seating area. Our host was Mike, who happened to be from Austin, too! We had a nice chat about ATX as we started the tasting.

Honig Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Napa Valley, CA - $16/bottle
This wine is fermented in stainless.

Aroma - light green fruit, a little grassy
Taste - light fruit, acid, crisp, bright

I like it!

Honig Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Rutherford, CA - $25/bottle
This wine is made in the Bordeaux style. It is a blend of 85% Honig Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Honig Estate Muscat, and 11% Honig Estate Sémillon.

Aroma - sweet and buttery
Taste - creamy, light fruit, dry, light oak

Mike says that this wine is good with food. I don't prefer buttery white wines, so it's just okay for my palate.

Honig Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Napa Valley, CA - $40/bottle
This wine is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot.

Aroma - black fruit
Taste - black fruit, black tea, dark cocoa, moderate to strong tannins, dry, supple

Like it!

Honig Bartolucci Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, St. Helena, CA - $75/bottle
This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the base of Spring Mountain in St. Helena. Mike says that Spec's is one of the only stores in Austin that carries it.

Aroma - dark plums, almost like port
Taste - dark plums, rich, moderate to strong tannins, nice minerality, dark cocoa

We all LOVE this wine!

Honig Cabernet Sauvignon Pink 2010, Napa Valley, CA
This rosé is made in the French style and a portion of the proceeds benefits breast cancer research. I've never tried a Cab Sauv rosé, so I'm really excited!

Aroma - floral
Taste - light fruit, dry

Nice - I like it!

Honig Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Rutherford, CA - $55/bottle
This wine is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

Aroma - honeyed, lychees, apricot
Taste - honey, sweet

A very nice dessert wine - I like it!

What a lovely way to start a day of wine tasting! Mike was a fantastic, knowledgeable host, and Honig arranged the rest of our day for us. Thanks to a wonderful winery!

Note to self: Mike also recommended the Scribe Syrah - will have to try it!
