College Roomie Reunion - Friday Night Dinner

Chef SN really set us up with food and wine for the weekend in wine country! She started us off on Friday evening with a cheese course and then dinner.

Domaine Allimant-Laugnef Crémant d'Alsace Rosé, Alsace, France - $19
Chef SN brought this sparkling Rosé to share with us. It tasted bright fruit, slight floral, dry, crisp, and bubbly - so good!

We paired it with fresh Asiago, Saint Agur Blue, Laura Chenel's Chèvre, Burrata, fig and olive spread, crackers, and homemade bruschetta. A fantastic start to our girls' weekend of food and wine!

Verus Riesling 2008, Slovenia - $20
Aroma - light tropical fruit, a little minerality, a tiny bit of honey
Taste - light grapefruit, a little minerality, dry

This wine was also good with cheese and bread!

Next, the chef assigned tasks for us - from chopping to grilling, we all pitched in to prepare dinner. The wine she chose to pair with dinner was one that I've never had before.

Biohof Pratsch Rotenpüllen Grüner Veltliner 2010 - $17
Aroma - light, hops
Taste - light fruit, dry, hops, slightly effervescent

The wine was good with Caprese salad (heirloom tomatoes and Burrata) and tiger prawns over grilled squash risotto drizzled with a balsamic reduction. I think most of us actually preferred the Riesling to this wine.

After dinner we retired to the spa to catch up a little more. We opened up an inexpensive bottle of Pinot Noir.

Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Noir 2009, Central Coast, CA - $10
Aroma - cherries and spice
Taste - cherries, spice, simple, soft tannins

An okay wine - none of us loved it, but it was fine for an after-dinner chat in a hot tub with old friends!
