Austin Wine Merchant - "Great Wines for Beef Stew" Tasting

The Austin Wine Merchant tasting today featured great wines for beef stew, so I was expecting rich reds!

Domaine des Coteaux des Travers Cairanne 2009, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages, France - $14.99

Aroma - red and black fruit
Taste - fruit, tea, moderate tannins, oak
An okay wine.

See this wine's updated tasting notes.

Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Billi Billi 2005, Victoria, Australia - $13.75

This wine was rated 91 by James Halliday.

Aroma - red and black fruit, a little hot
Taste - fruit and wood
Not a huge fan of this wine, but may be okay for Shiraz fans.

Marietta Cellars Zinfandel 2008, Sonoma County, CA - $17.50

Aroma - dark fruit, a little hot
Taste - dark fruit, a little syrupy, moderate to heavy tannins
Seems very sweet and high in alcohol at 15.4% - this wine is a no for me, but perhaps a maybe for someone else.

J. Bookwalter Subplot No 24, Columbia Valley, Washington - $14.99

This red is a blend of 30% Merlot, 29% Syrah, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec, and 4% Petit Verdot.
Aroma - red fruit, bananas
Taste - tart bitter red fruit, moderate to strong tannins
This wine is very high in alcohol - 14.9% - maybe too much time in oak?

Update - May 28, 2011 - another AWM tasting

See the very different tasting notes for this wine here.

Not the strongest tasting I've attended at AWM. Full of maybes for me.
