Sequoia Grove Winery, Napa Valley, CA - wine tasting

Sequoia Grove Winery, which is located on the St. Helena Highway in Napa, was one of the most peaceful, beautiful, tasting rooms and grounds we visited during our trip. They encourage you to take your wine glasses out to the gorgeous garden surrounded by sequoias...

...which is of course what we opted to do. However, we chose a bad day to do it, as the entire lush garden smelled of fish fertilizer! At first, I thought that it was the wine, until D pointed out it was the garden itself. Not optimal for a wine tasting!

Tastings are $15 for your choice of four wines, so we were able to try eight wines between the two of us. Jack also gave us a bonus taste at the end.

First up, the Sequoia Grove Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Napa Valley, which retails for $20/bottle at the winery and is 100% SB. It contains 14.3% alcohol, and its sub-appellation is Yountville.

Aroma - citrus, pineapple
Taste - citrus, good acid, grapefruit

I definitely like this wine!

Second wine was Sequoia Grove Rollicking Rosé 2009, Napa Valley, which retails for $16/bottle at the winery, and is made from Syrah grapes. It contains 14.1% alcohol.

Aroma - floral, grassy, light fruit
Taste - dry, floral

This wine is okay, but again, I'm not a huge Rosé fan, so those who like Rosé might like this wine better than I do.

Third taste was Sequoia Grove Glorious Gewürzt!, Napa Valley, which retails for $18/bottle at the winery.

Aroma - floral, fruity, honeydew
Taste - floral, fruity, honeydew

I loved this wine!

Fourth was the Sequoia Grove Merlot 2006, Napa Valley, which retails for $40/bottle at the winery.

Aroma - dark fruit, licorice
Taste - black plums, black tea, soft tannins

A good wine.

Fifth we tasted the Sequoia Grove Rebellious Red 2007, Napa Valley, which retails for $30/bottle at the winery. It's a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah.

Aroma - raisins, prunes, tart cherries, a little dark chocolate, a little smoky, black licorice
Taste - dark fruit, smoky

I like this wine!

Wine number six was the Sequoia Grove Stagecoach Vineyard Syrah 2007, Napa Valley, which retails for $28/bottle at the winery. It contains 1% Viognier.

Aroma - dark fruit, a little smoky
Taste - dark fruit, moderate tannins

I like this wine.

Seventh was Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Napa Valley, which retails for $34/bottle at the winery.

Aroma - dark fruit, cocoa
Taste - black fruit, cocoa, moderate tannins

I love this wine! In fact, the 2005 vintage tasted like melted chocolate and was the reason that I wanted to stop at the winery.

Eighth was the Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, Napa Valley, which retails for $38/bottle at the winery. It is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and another red varietal. It contains 14.2% alcohol and was aged for 20 months in 45% American oak.

Aroma - dark fruit, dark chocolate
Taste - dark fruit, tobacco, strong tannins

I also love this wine!

The bonus wine (the ninth of this tasting) was the Sequoia Grove Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Napa Valley, retails for $85/bottle at the winery. It contains 14.4% alcohol and was aged 20 months in French oak. Its sub-appellation is Atlas Peak.

Aroma - currants, little hot, dark chocolate
Taste - fruit, dark chocolate, strong tannins

I did love this wine as well.

Overall, a wonderful tasting at Sequoia Grove!
