Austin Wine Merchant Tasting - Chilean Wines from Galan Vineyards

Austin Wine Merchant's tasting today featured four wines from Galan Vineyards in Lontué Valley, Chile.

Doña Auristela Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2009 retails for $13.75/bottle at AWM. The Galan rep told me that this particular wine is estate grown. The Doña Auristela line is the top tier of wine produced at Galan.

Aroma - tropical fruit, honey
Taste - tropical fruit, dry, good acid

A very nice wine!

Galan Private Reserve Merlot 2008 retails for $9.99/bottle at AWM. It is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Private Reserve wines are the middle tier of wines at this winery.

Aroma - dark raisins
Taste - dark raisins, tobacco, moderate tannins, very bitter finish

Not my favorite of this tasting - only a maybe.

Galan Carmenère 2009 is estate-bottled and retails for $8.95/bottle at AWM. I borrowed this image from the 2008 vintage. This is the most basic tier of wines made at Galan.

Aroma - sweet black plums, tobacco
Taste - dark fruit, tobacco, soft to moderate tannins

I do like this wine! Will definitely purchase it! See updated tasting notes for this wine!

Doña Auristela Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 retails for $13.75/bottle at AWM. It is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Malbec.

Aroma - blackberries
Taste - blackberries, tobacco, moderate to strong tannins

This is a nice wine that didn't wow me. It's a good buy and definitely one to consider when looking for a full-bodied red wine that is fruit-forward.
